3 - Metrolink Commuter Train Crash |
Event: Metrolink Train Crash
Date: SEPT. 12, 2008
Time: 4: 22:23 PM PDT (Exact time of accident from train's on-board recorder)
Place: Outside of Chatsworth, California
Exact Co-ordinates of Crash Site: 118º W 36' 02" / 34º N 16' 17"
- Metrolink Train 111 , left L.A.'s Union Station at 3:35 PM on its way to Moorpark in Ventura County. Then, just after leaving the Chatsworth Station, with 225 commuters aboard; went around a 45 degree bend.
- Around that bend, Metrolink 111 crashed head-on with a Union Pacific Freight Train traveling that same sharp curve.
- 24 people were killed and 135 injured. At 11:02 PM that same Friday night, there were still passengers aboard the train.
- The crash site is in the Chatsworth area of the San Fernando Valley. The Crash site is in an area where the tracks form a "U" shape about 2,500 feet wide. At the top of the bend is a 500 foot long tunnel (the Santa Susana Pass) with a siding that permits one train to wait for another to go past. It is common in California for commuter trains and freight trains to travel the same tracks.
- The Metrolink train was traveling at 40 mph at the time of the crash. The train's engineer died in the crash.
- The 2 trains became entwined in a grotesque mass of twisted metal trapping victims both dead and alive.
- This collision is believed to have been caused due to the failure of a Metrolink engineer to stop his train at a red light signal. According to Metrolink, their engineer ignored a red light signaling him to stop. The engineer should have waited at the "red light" and allowed the Freight train to pass. The engineer was working as a subcontractor with Veolia Transportation and was a former Amtrak employee.
- A Group of teenagers who were friends with the Engineer (Robert Sanchez) said to be fault; were text messaging him during this trip. They were train enthusiasts who hoped to become train engineers themselves. They received a text message from Sanchez at 4:22:01 PM in which he told them he was coming up on another train and they would be passing eachother (presumably in the expected fashion). The teens said Sanchez could NEVER have failed to stop at the Red Light Signal, new it would be coming up.
- The Metrolink representative said she simply could not believe an engineer would be "texting" while driving a train. Nevertheless: below is the final text message received at 4:22:01 PM PDT.
- The Investigation concluded that in fact Sanchez sent his last text message at 4:2:01 PM and that according to the on-board recorder, the accident occurred at 4:22:23 PM.
- The Metrolink train was rounding a curve at 42 mph and the freight train was coming out of the tunnel at 41 mph. The engineers of each train had no more than 4 or 5 second to react before the collision. The freight train engineer activated his emergency brake 2 seconds before the crash, but the Metrolink train brakes were never engaged. Sanchez would have seen the freight engineer and he would have seen Sanchez before the crash... if Sanchez looked up.
- This Train Crash is said to be the deadliest in Metrolink History.
